  • Setting up a budget when you start planning is essential for your big day.

  • On average, couples who get married in Cape Town spend R250,000 + (with all the ‘bells and whistles’) with the wedding venue and catering being some of the most expensive items.

  • Removing small details from your wedding budget can reduce the cost; for example wedding favors or a big wedding cake.

Don’t let the graph above overwhelm you; it is only a guideline. And there are a few items you could remove to reduce your costs.

When explaining the list to couples; I always advise them to make a list of what their priorities are for their wedding day and which services/items they don’t want to compromise on. I am always happy to hear when photography is on that list 😉

Even though the chart above shows the average cost of an economical wedding could be R300 000+, you can easily cut the costs down to R2500 p/person or less.

The South Africa Wedding Industry Report for 2021, by The Wedding Expo, showed that a lot of couples in South Africa spent between R200 000 – 250 000. This all depends on in which part of the country you are getting married and what your budget is. But if you want to get married in Cape Town with 100 guests or more (in summer), you should expect to pay more.

Here is a list of things you can keep in mind when you want to save on your wedding budget:

– Weekday / Out of Season Dates (May – August).
Before booking your venue, FIRST find out how much all the service providers will cost you.
No Gift Favours (You are already paying for your guests food & beverages).
– Choose a Plated Dessert OR Cake.  No need to have both.  Or consider having a smaller cake for cutting purposes.
Consider what the venue has included & make sure it is nice (i.e chairs & tables).
Re-use ceremony chairs for reception chairs if push comes to shove.
Book a Photographer for the moments that matter / cut out getting ready shots or having the full reception photographed. Rather book an experienced photographer for 3-4 hours if you want high quality and memorable photographs.
– Pay for either your bridesmaids hair or make up.  No need to do both.
Give your bridesmaids a colour scheme and get them to choose an outfit/dress that suits them.
Inviting fewer guests / having an intimate wedding. This way you will be able to spend more on your dress, photographer or even your catering; giving your chosen guests a more luxurious experience on a budget.
– Try and work with one stop shops to bring down your delivery costs (i.e find a place that hires tables & chairs instead of sourcing from 2 places).
Draw up an extensive budget beforehand and try and stick to your costs.
– Design your own digital save the dates on Canva. Or your own wedding website on The Knot.
Fewer Bridesmaids & Groomsmen is better (2-4); especially if you want to spoil them.
Serve more canapes & cut out a starter meal.
Pay for all Soft Drinks, Wine, Water & MCC.  More expensive drinks for the guests account.
Leave out a dance floor structure and rather create the area by creating an inclusive floor plan.
Have one standing menu per table instead of at each setting / Limit all the stationery where you can.
Look at venues further outside of Cape Town; you might find ones that are less expensive (like Bosduifklip in Lambert’s Bay).
– Use flowers that are in season.
